- Farr 40 Chesapeake Fleet
Current Farr 40 owners in the Chesapeake Fleet have come from various backgrounds, boats and racing experiences. Jeff Scholz the Farr 40 Chesapeake Fleet Captain and Larry Bulman of Yellow Jacket have owned a series of IOR/IMS/MHS/PHRF/IRC boats over 40 years and have re-discovered one-design racing in the Farr 40 class after racing the Farr 40 in IRC. They were the first boat to go to masthead spinnakers in 2006 while racing in IRC. Rod Jabin and Team Ramrod have a history of success in the International Farr 40 Class, finishing 7th and top US team in the 2008 and continue to race the Farr 40 locally when not traveling with the Melges 32. In 2008, Eric Wulff of Endorphin, who raced a Sydney 36 in PHRF A-1, and Gary Beer of Sundance, who owned a Swan 48 and had rarely raced before bought Farr 40’s. Kevin McNeil of Night Shift a long time Star and J/35 one design and PHRF racer bought at the end of 2008. In the fall of 2008, the class had it first organizational meeting and set a one design schedule for the 2009 season. The US Naval Academy which had a donated Farr 40 in their fleet joined the class for 2009. Team Tsunami who raced a Farr 395 on the Chesapeake in PHRF A-0 and Wednesday night races and a NY 42 in New England joined the class in mid summer of 2009.
While the class has grown from 2 boats to 7, the owners have made the commitment to sail a limited eight race one design series schedule from the end of April to the beginning of November each year with most series being 2 or 3 day events. This past year the class travelled to Block Island in June and this year the North American are scheduled for October on the Chesapeake Bay.
The plain fact; the boat is fantastic and fun to sail and has lots of speed and all these owners have been competitive and successful in the Farr 40 Chesapeake Fleet, and each is a better team today as the result of this competitive racing.
