Welcome to 2010 and the Start of the Farr 40 Chesapeake 2010 season!

Farr 40 Chesapeake Start

Farr 40 Chesapeake Start

2010 begins with the launch of the Farr 40 Chesapeake Fleet website. Fleet captain Jeff Scholz had this item at the top of the “To-Do” list with a push to launch early in 2010. Knowing that communication, information and marketing is what is need to grow this fleet; the website is structured to be clean and easily navigated. The goal is to provide the fleet members, their crew, potential fleet members and the media with a consistent source of information, regatta dates, results, photos, links and relevant resoucres. The local team of Amie Boothe (website design) and Sara Proctor (photography) of Regatta-Design were called on for their expertice and knowledge. This website will be coupled with other social-networking mediums to provide a complete experience and timely updates for the local Farr 40 fleet events. The 2010 season schedule is already posted, offering even stronger racing than last year and highlights include the Annapolis NOOD, Screwpile Race Week, Annapolis Race Week, Storm Trysailspring and fall weekends, an AYC fall distance race, the 2010 Farr 40 North American Championship and concluding with the Storm Trysail IRC Championship. If you are considering joining this fleet, the time has come!

A Look Back at 2009!

Farr 40 Chesapeake 2009

Farr 40 Chesapeake 2009

2009 will be remembered as the year the Farr 40 racing took hold on the Chesapeake Bay. 2008 saw the occasional grouping of 3-4 Farr 40 racing in PHRF but it was in 2009 the fleet jumped to 5-8 Farr 40’s racing and as many as 8 Farr 40 One-Design Class regattas and 2 Farr 40 class parties. It was in 2009 that the Annapolis NOOD hosted a Farr 40 One-Design start; the only other Farr 40 fleet to offer a NOOD start is Chicago. The local Storm Trysail station hosted 2 of the Farr 40 regattas, spring and fall, providing great racing and inviting the sailing teams to participate in their social events. CBYRA showed their support for this growing fleet and hosted a Farr 40 One-Design start during Annapolis Race Week. The fleet sailed 8 races over the 3 days of competitive racing. Annapolis Yacht Club allowed for modifications to the Fall Series, providing the local Farr 40 fleet with 2 days of racing the last weekend of the series; a great lead up to the Storm Trysail IRC Championship 2 weeks later. The IRC championship concluded the 2009 Farr 40 season on the Chesapeake Bay, the perfect wrap-up of this first season, leaving owners and crew looking forward to the 2010 season and continued growth.

East Meets West!

Farr 40 Racing

Farr 40 Racing

Following on the example and success of other sailing venues, the Chesapeake Bay brings Farr 40 racing back to the East Coast. When you look at the sailing conditions, water depths, local racing trends, and demographics of big-boat racing on the Chesapeake Bay; there is no doubt the Farr 40 is a perfect fit. Designed by Farr Yacht Design, in Annapolis, Maryland, one might even think that the Farr 40 concept was in some way inspired by this local racing scene. For many years Farr 40 racing has been synonomous with Grand-Prix racing; assembling the strongest fleets steep with talent from around the world. More recently, a common trend has developed with localized fleets being establishied and offering competitive and friendly racing closer to home. On the West Coast, a fleet has formed in southern California and proven beyond doubt that the Farr 40 class can have great “local” racing at a competitive level. This fleet has since grown to 11 Farr 40’s strong and continues to gain interest. More information available at the website: www.f40west.org. You can’t really call this a new idea as the Great Lakes Farr 40 fleet has been established and consistently competing for several years now on Lake Michigan and has played host to many national and international Farr 40 events.
